Helping parents navigate
extreme content online

Jib helps families identify when their kids are exposed to manipulative content promoting radical views and hateful attitudes towards other people. We help kids process this information in a healthy way by prompting them to reflect and think critically about harmful content in real time. For parents, we provide guidance on how to discuss content with their kids and prevent harmful behavior and attitudes.

Why you need to act now

The internet moves faster than any parent can track. Learn what your family is being exposed to and how to talk about it in a healthy way.

Radicalizing content that promotes hateful attitudes is on the rise

YouTube and social media platforms are designed to maximize your time viewing content, not wellbeing. This design has rewarded controversial content that makes bold claims promoting attitudes that are hateful towards certain groups (e.g., women). This content is everywhere, is difficult to fully block or screen, and is increasingly being targeted at younger audiences.

Watching harmful content can lead to real-world harm

Radicalizing content rarely starts extreme. It begins with relatable frustrations and slowly normalizes harmful attitudes, most commonly towards women or minority groups. Adopting these attitudes can lead to harassment, violence, and other anti-social behavior. Even for kids who don't fully adopt these attitudes, exposure can lead to negative views of themselves and others, and damage their mental health and relationships.

Parents can work with their kids to build resilience

YouTube and social media have real benefits in education, entertainment, and social connection. It can be counterproductive to block usage completely, but no parent can keep up with every creator or piece of content their kids encounter. With Jib, parents can better understand when their children are exposed to harmful content and have the tools to discuss the content and build reslience towards the way it can manipulate attitudes and behavior.

How it works

Real-time warnings while watching

As a family member watches a YouTube video, Jib analyzes the content in real time. When harmful or radicalizing content is detected, a warning appears directly alongside the video with a prompt to think critically about the information. For harmless videos, the viewer won't see any difference.

Our messages are designed to encourage reflection and empathy rather than shame. We encourage viewers to think critically about whether the content is trying to manipulate their attitudes, building resilience instead of just blocking.

Guidance for parents

Parents get a regular activity report showing when family members encounter radicalizing content, what specific harmful videos and messages they were exposed to, and personalized talking points on how to discuss flagged content with your child.

We only analyze YouTube video views and the transcripts of those videos. No browsing history or personal data is collected beyond what is needed to monitor content viewed on YouTube.

Jib Activity Report for Parents

Getting started is simple

1

Parent signs up

Create an account and subscribe. Add up to 5 family members who will have the YouTube videos they watch reviewed for harmful content.

2

Install the extension

Each family member installs our web extension on their browser and logs in. The extension will automatically work when viewing YouTube videos.

3

Real-time protection

If a video contains harmful content, a pop-up engages the viewer to reflect on the content. Parents are provided with an action plan tailored to the type of content their children are viewing.

Where we're going next

Jib is just getting started. Early users directly shape how we fight online radicalization.

Expanded content categories

We are starting with misogynistic content and plan to expand to additional issues including racism, anti-democratic attitudes, and partisan animosity.

Broader platform support

YouTube is the primary radicalization engine for the misogynistic content we are starting with, but is just the beginning. We plan to extend tailored solutions to other platforms (e.g., Instagram, TikTok).

More tools for parents

We plan to increase the level of support we provide to parents with more intervention options, resources, and premium features.
